How can I create a 529 plan for my son if the Mom won’t tell me the social security number?

For that matter, won’t Ineed the social security number to make him the beneficiary of my life insurance policy and 401k? Won’t I need it to claim him on my taxes?
Some questions probably need to be worked out with you and your son’s mother. First – you cannot both claim him on taxes and if she’s the primary care giver (he’s living with her) she’ll be the one claiming him on taxes not you.
Also, she probably doesn’t trust you enough to give you the SSN for fear you’ll use it inappropriately- never mind your objections, I don’t care. But if you’re serious about settig the account up for your son, do so at a financial institution with her present and able to give the SSN to the person setting up the account. This should remain confidential on their part and you can still be a responpsible Daddy.
Unless there is some form of legal agreement that blocks you from knowing your son’s social security number, you have every legal right to knowing this information. The reasons stated above by Chase are legitimate, however that does not allow your son’s mother to block this information from you without some form of offical legal documentation.
I would first recommend you try to resolve this amicably with your son’s mother (as Chase implies), however if this does not prove to be successful, I would recommend you seek legal representation, as what your son’s mother is doing is not right or legal.

See now that’s not so hard it it?
