Are 2009 contributions to qualified tuition program (QTP or 529 plan) deductible from federal income taxes?

09 May

I’ve seen phraseology referring to “pretax” contributions to 529 plans inferring that contributions should be tax deductible, but I see no place that explicitly states that this is so.

What is best option available for short-term investment?

06 May

I am looking to put some of my money from a college grant towards grad school savings. I have $1000 to start and will be able to add $800/mo for about a year to 15 months. I will need full access to the money once I start grad school in 15 months. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked into online savings accounts and CD accounts. Are there advantages to these over other options?

Which investment vehicle should I use if I will only be saving for two years?

04 May

I am currently in college, and me and my girlfriend are planning to take a vacation after we graduate in 2010. We will both be putting whatever extra money we can into an account to save for when we graduate. I was wondering what the best account to use would be. Is a money market account smart right now with the state of the economy? Should I just use a high yield savings or CD?

What are the important steps to take when buying into an existing investment property as a partner?

02 May

This is an established property managment business renting apartments to graduate college students. I would be buying a 49% position in a LLC. The existing owner would retain the other 51% and would also manage the property for a fee. Our goal would be to sell the property at the end of 3 to 4 years, when the 51% owner is ready to retire and when my son is finished with his graduate program at the same school.
