Can you start a 529 plan before you have children? Or must you put it in a living child’s name?

30 Oct

I am 20 years old and don’t plan on having children for probably 6 or 7 + more years. I’ve been reading up on them a bit but nothing specifically addresses this concern, but they seem to imply that it must be a living child. Any help would be appreciated.
Wow.. No one knows about investing for their kids.. That’s sad.. I pity the children born to those..

How can I save for a house, retirement, and child’s educations simultaneously with a low income?

12 Oct

I’m 29, with a 3 year old son. I’m a single mother. I am currently self-employed as an independent contractor. I made about 38292 last year. I started putting money away into my savings account to save for an IRA by the time I’m thirty. I am still researching on how to invest on my IRA (ETFs, Mutual Funds, etc). I want to buy a home. I also have about 4k saved for my son’s college education. I had done some reading about the tax braket that I’m in and it suggest that I depend on financial aid for him and not invest in the college plan 529, so I wanted to save some cash to help him pay any loans he may have after graduation. My real question is: how do I save for a home and try to max my ROTH IRA simultaneously? Any tips or ideas will be greatly appreciated. What kind of account can I put my home savings into that will accrue good interest. Thanks in Advance

How is my child’s 529 plan doing?

06 Oct

I currently have $37,000 in my daughter’s 529 plan. She is currently in 4th grade. Is this a good start for a public state university?

What are some good programs for saving for a child’s college?

01 Oct

I know there are many investment programs that gear towards future college expenses. Some are non-taxable. I need a program that will hopefully grow but does not require a huge amount to start up. Any ideas? Thanks!

Investing in Child’s education?

12 Sep

I would like to invest in my child’s education. Would it be smarter to invest in a 529 plan or savings bonds? Is there a significant difference between the two? Are there other options out there that I should look into before making a decision? I got info in regards to a 529 plan, but does anyone know how it specifically works in Michigan and if there are tax benefits by keeping it in Michigan vs. going through another state?

How much should parents pay for single child’s college education?

05 Sep

I am an only child(immigrated from China, place of one child per family laws), and am currently in college very close to home (25 to 30 min drive).

For freshman year, I am living in the dorms, and coming home most weekends for laundry(I wash all our laundry), relaxation, and a good place to do work. Besides laundry, I often cook a few meals-especially during breaks, and try to help with yard work. For the next three years, I plan to change to commuting, to save money on dorm expenses and allow myself to have a car and be able to hold an off campus job.

I made a 4.00 last semester, and won’t be expecting any less of myself this semester. I am a double major in Business Administration and Philosophy.

As for finances, I hold just a President’s scholarship. 21k, 4 years. This is for a private university. My question is: how much should I be expected to contribute to my own education? Also, how soon should I be expected to move out? I ask this because another option for graduate school is pursuing a 5th year at my university to complete my undergraduate and mba degrees. And also because the social norm has always been independence/going to a school far away straight at age 18, after high school. Because their home is very close to the university, my parents do not see an apartment as practical, and would rather me pay rent to them if I insist on moving out.

Thank you to anyone who responds.
My parents have never been open about their finances to me…sadly…all I know is that they have invested a portion in stocks, and have some retirement money saved(not nearly enough, I worry).

My kind of lifestyle is spending money something like once every couple of months, been to the movies once this year, only shop when clothes shrink(I’m tall), and generally the kind of thing mentioned as the “stone age” lifestyle. What are hoopdies, btw?

Why Should I Save for My Child’s Education?

20 Jul

Why Should I Save for My Child’s Education? There’s many ways to look at it, and one way that some of us that are financial advisers look at is that the child needs to have some responsibility, but the parents can also help contribute. And there’s many ways you can look at it, but one way is called a third, a third, a third. The child, through their savings or scholarships, pays a third, a third of it comes from school loans, and the parents pay a third. And there’s many ways to do that. And there’s something called a, but the good thing about that is that the student has some responsibility, and possibly the parent will help with the loan if the child’s successful and completes college, which also offers incentives. But the parent also needs to recognize that their top priority should be for their retirement plan. So, if they’re fully funding their retirement plan, saving ten percent, and they have extra money, then they possibly should be putting some money aside. And a great plan that is available is something called a 529 Plan. And it’s offered in each state, and so each state’s 529 Plan is different. In Ohio, they have a very nice 529 Plan. So, first thing would be to investigate what your state has to offer, but if there’s tax advantages and the money can be contributed by parents, grandparents, relatives, friends, so, not only can parents contribute, but they can get help from others.

Moms, are you doing anything to help pay for your child’s college?

06 Jul

Hello Moms! My son just turned 1 a few days ago and I would like to get something set up for his college education. I’m thinking a 529 Savings Plan. I don’t know where to begin though. Any advice? How are you helping fund your child’s education? I know we may not be able to contribute a lot, but every little bit helps (I think anyways).

Investing for my child’s college education. 529 Help?

16 Jun

I’m expecting a child in July and already thinking about saving for their college education. Does anyone know about 529 College savings programs? I’ve been reading for an hour on the 529 link from my upromise account. I was thinking of starting an account for Finn once he’s born. I was reviewing some of the return rates over the last year and they have nose dived! (no shock huh?)

Just wondering if anyone is going to invest in one of these for their child? I don’t know if now is a good time or not because it kinda looks like you might end up losing money at first. Opinions anyone? Suggestions of any other ways to save?
