Advice for a college student interested in investing?
I am a college student interested in investing a little bit of my money through online stock trading. I have never really invested money before, so I am really just looking for advice on how to get started. I am not looking to do any serious trading, just a few options to let my investment grow. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!
Investing in Child’s education?
I would like to invest in my child’s education. Would it be smarter to invest in a 529 plan or savings bonds? Is there a significant difference between the two? Are there other options out there that I should look into before making a decision? I got info in regards to a 529 plan, but does anyone know how it specifically works in Michigan and if there are tax benefits by keeping it in Michigan vs. going through another state?
Question about Mutual Investing?
I have a 529 college savings plan for my son. They invest in mutual funds. Currently I am investing $40 per month, I know that’s not a lot, but what I can currently afford. My question is this…right now the mutual fund is down, no big deal it fluctuates a lot..but is it better that I make one lump sum investment once per month (what I am currently doing), or breaking it up into 2 investments (of $20 each in this case) that might then take advantage in drops in cost and maybe not hurt so much in price spikes? They do not charge a per transaction fee so it would not cost me any more to break the investment into two payments instead of one.
I’ve been in the same fund since 2003 and currently showing about a 40% return overall. I was just thinking that trying up the number of shares even if only a share or two at a time while they are low might not be a bad idea…guess it would be more worth it if i had a good chunk of money to invest right now while they are down, but I don’t

Advice on Investing for a 25 year old?
I am a 25 yr old married man. Total net income is approx. 80k/yr. My wife has no 401(k)/IRA, but I do have a company matched which i max out and then add on 6% before tax unmatched after that, which totals 12% of my paycheck going into my 401(k). We have our savings, approx 17k in a high interest online savings account. We have a 529 being funded $100 every month for when my wife goes back to school. We also have approx. 35k in mutual funds.
Zero credit card/school loan debt and only a car payment on 1 of our 2 cars. We do rent as of now, only because we are “on call” to be transfered out of town within 6 months.
Here is my question: We will be coming into approx. 5k in the next month or so and I want some opinions on how to invest it. Stick with mutual funds? Are REITS even worth it with the housing market as it is? I am pretty familiar with mutual funds, but after that, my knowledge is limited.
Any advice?

Investing for my child’s college education. 529 Help?
I’m expecting a child in July and already thinking about saving for their college education. Does anyone know about 529 College savings programs? I’ve been reading for an hour on the 529 link from my upromise account. I was thinking of starting an account for Finn once he’s born. I was reviewing some of the return rates over the last year and they have nose dived! (no shock huh?)
Just wondering if anyone is going to invest in one of these for their child? I don’t know if now is a good time or not because it kinda looks like you might end up losing money at first. Opinions anyone? Suggestions of any other ways to save?
