How much should I save to have a good backup fund/savings?

My husband and I just had a baby (9 mo’s old) and we’ve been diligently saving ever since he was born just because. For an emergency plan, a buffer, and just b/c we like to combat materialism and waste.

Since last Sept. we’ve saved about 2.5 months worth of take-home pay, and by this Dec. we’ll have saved over 3.5 months of take-home pay. We did this by saving 90-95% of extra paychecks, bonuses, tax refunds, etc. I have it earning interest in an ING acct.

Since we’ve never really saved before, should we strive for a certain % of our take-home pay (or month’s worth), or do you just keep saving with no goal amount in mind?

Your input is appreciated.

I don’t seek professional advice because I can’t afford it.. I diversified as best as I could, but it doesn’t seem like it’s doing much…Any advice?

Should my sister open a Roth IRA or 529 plan for her daughter?

I’m a little confused on this. Some well known sites seem to indicate that a Roth IRA is okay for college but others seem to say that you can’t have a Roth for a child since the child has no earned income. My sister, single mom, has a large lump sum she wants to put away for her daughters college. Which is best?

im taking a photography class this summer at my local tech college. What kind of camera should i get?

I’ve heard really good things about the Canon EOS Rebel, but dont know which model is the best, and at this point dont really know what all the different features mean. any tips will help. after maxxing out several memory cards on my phone, and since my son is only a year old, i figured this would be a good investment. thanks.

What degree should i get if i want to be a investor working for an investment company?

I want to do something in finance like investor, currency broker, something along those lines. I am in college now but unsure of the major i want to go for yet. Anyone that is any of these things have an idea on what kind of degree i should get?-Looking to make 400,000 a year. I love money (who doest) and getting payed to play with others and get payed a lot for it sounds fun!

Which investment vehicle should I use if I will only be saving for two years?

I am currently in college, and me and my girlfriend are planning to take a vacation after we graduate in 2010. We will both be putting whatever extra money we can into an account to save for when we graduate. I was wondering what the best account to use would be. Is a money market account smart right now with the state of the economy? Should I just use a high yield savings or CD?
